I just finished reading The Awakened Kingdom by NK Jemisin, a novella sequel to the Inheritance trilogy.
This is my new favorite story in this setting. I thought I was done with the Inheritance series, I genuinely thought that The Kingdom of Gods had wrapped everything up, but I was completely wrong. I want more of this world, now.
Well…really I want more of Shill.
Jemisin has a habit of playing with the narrator in her stories, and this one is no different. It’s told from the perspective of a newborn godling, and that perspective is delightful. We get to see a curious child-god’s perspective on all these characters and cultures we already know from the trilogy, and all the mayhem and confusion and wonderful learning that entails. I want more of this. I want to see this character grow up. I know I probably never will, but it’s still delightful to have gotten this little glimpse.
