I just finished reading David Mogo, Godhunter, by Suyi Davies Okungbowa.
Quick synopsis: The gods have fallen to earth in Lagos. Demigod-for-hire David Mogo makes a living catching small gods and stopping them from making mischief, but now he’s been hired to go after two very big deities indeed, on behalf of a wizard who probably doesn’t have anyone’s best interests at heart. Chaos predictably ensues.
This was an odd book to read, mostly because I suspect it may have started life as three separate serialized novellas. Climaxes kept happening that in any other book would have been the grand finale, but which here were just one more step forward in the plot. The pace of the story was unrelentingly fast in a way that I’ve rarely seen, and it took some getting used to.
The story itself turned out to be a good one. Feuding gods fallen to earth, ruminations on both human and divine nature, great characters, traditional Nigerian magic; oh, yes, I am absolutely in for all of that.
There were only a few things that I didn’t like. The book takes place mostly in abandoned and destroyed sections of Lagos, which kind of dulls the impact when the battles of the gods cause massive destruction–we never really saw the alive, active part of the city, so knowing that it’s been decimated doesn’t carry a whole lot of weight. Also, a couple of characters had names that were too similar and I kept getting them confused.
That’s…basically all the complaints I have, actually. Good book. Go into it expecting to read multiple stories serialized instead of a single novel and I think you’ll quite enjoy it.
